Why Do Google Rankings Change Every Day?
Because there is no single ranking to change. Google doesn’t maintain one ordered list of results per keyword that occasionally gets reshuffled. It assembles a result page per query, per user, per location, per device, at request time. Your tracker samples that process once a day from one synthetic vantage point, and reports the sample as if it were a fact. Day-to-day movement in that sample is mostly sampling variance.
That’s the deflating version. The useful version is knowing which variance is which, because a small fraction of movement is real and worth acting on.
The four things moving your number
Personalisation and history. Even a “clean” query carries signals: language, prior interactions in the session, whether the searcher is signed in. Trackers try to strip this out with fresh sessions and no cookies, which means they measure a hypothetical user who doesn’t exist. That’s the right call — it’s reproducible — but it isn’t your actual visitor.
Geography. This is the big one and it’s routinely underestimated. Results differ not just by country but by city and sometimes by neighbourhood, for queries that don’t look local at all. “Accountant software” behaves locally. “Best running shoes” behaves locally. If your tracker samples from one location and your traffic comes from twenty, your tracked position is one point on a distribution you never see.
SERP layout. You didn’t move; the page grew. An AI overview, a video carousel, a new People Also Ask block, an extra ads slot — each of these can push the same blue link from position 4 to position 6 without a single ranking signal changing. Position is a measure of ordinal placement among organic results, and the amount of page above position 1 varies constantly.
Genuine re-ranking. Google re-evaluates continuously. Freshness signals promote a newer page, a competitor publishes, an index update lands. This is the category you actually care about, and it’s the smallest of the four.
The tell: movement shape, not movement size
A single keyword dropping four places tells you almost nothing. What separates noise from signal is the shape of the change across your whole tracked set.
- A few keywords moving a few places, different directions, day over day — noise. Ignore it. This is the baseline state of a healthy tracked set.
- One keyword swinging wildly and repeatedly across days — usually a genuinely volatile SERP, often one where Google is unsure of intent. Your page may be flickering in and out of a feature. Not a problem to fix; a SERP to watch.
- Most of a topic cluster moving the same direction at once — real. Something changed about how Google evaluates that group of pages, or about the pages themselves.
- Everything moving down at once, sitewide — real, and check technical causes before algorithmic ones. A robots change, a redirect chain, a server issue during recrawl, or a canonical mistake explains more sitewide drops than algorithm updates do.
The unit of diagnosis is the cluster, not the keyword. A tracker that only shows you individual keyword lines makes noise look like signal, because every individual line is noisy.
Why your tracker and Google disagree
You check a keyword manually, see position 3, and your tool says 7. Neither is wrong. Your browser applied your location, your history, and your account; the tracker applied a synthetic profile from a datacentre. You measured two different things. What to actually do
- Set a noise floor. Decide, in advance, how much movement is uninteresting — a few positions for most sites. Anything inside that band gets no attention.
- Alert on clusters, not keywords. Group tracked terms by topic and watch the group average. Single-keyword alerts will train you to ignore alerts.
- Track your real geography. If meaningful traffic comes from multiple metros, sample multiple locations or accept that your number is one draw from a distribution.
- Record SERP layout, not just position. Knowing an AI overview appeared on the day you “dropped” resolves the incident in ten seconds.
- Check less often than feels comfortable. More on that in how often you should check rankings.
The goal isn’t a stable graph. It’s a graph where the movements you can see are the ones worth explaining.
