Most position changes are noise — personalisation, geography, a datacentre you happened to hit, a SERP feature pushing everything down a slot. A few are real. Telling them apart is most of the job, and almost none of the writing about rank tracking is about that, because most of it is written to sell a rank tracker.
We don’t sell one. These are notes on the methodology: how trackers actually sample the SERP, why two tools report different positions for the same keyword on the same day, how to read a drop without panicking, and how often it’s worth looking at all.
